Why Mineral Make-up?

Consumer awareness is influencing many positive changes in the health and beauty industry. There is a growing demand for all-natural products. Organizations such as The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Environmental Working Group are advocating for the removal of harmful chemicals and ingredients from household products, food, cosmetics, and many other consumer products. The research is building and proving that many cosmetics ingredients if used over time can have serious side effects. Aside from the side effects, many ingredients in cosmetics today irritate the skin and cause breakouts. Several cosmetics companies are making positive changes and reformulating their products to meet this all-natural demand. While others are claiming to be “bare,” “all-natural,” “nude,” “essential,” or “beneficial” even though their makeup includes ingredients such as: bismuth, talc, ether, dimethicone, parabens, fragrance, dyes, and other harsh chemicals.

You’ll find some mineral makeup companies rate worse than pressed makeup companies. Just remember, even though an ingredient might have a “chemical-sounding” name doesn’t mean it’s bad for your skin. That is why consumer awareness is vital. Color Me Natural’s newsletter and blog will touch on the many ingredients to watch out for as well as provide resources for more information.

Our mineral makeup ingredients are based on a simple philosophy. Your makeup should be an extension of your skin care. It shouldn’t be the reason you have to go out and buy a acne face wash, blackhead strips, get microdermabrasion, or any other chemical treatment. You should wear makeup for the same reason you use skin care. Makeup should make your skin feel good, look beautiful, and help treat skin imperfections. That is why Color Me Natural doesn’t use too few ingredients or too many. Take for example a makeup that has bismuth as one of its first five ingredients. Ingredients are labeled from highest content to lowest content on the ingredient label. Bismuth is known to cause micro-tears in the skin. Especially, when they are in nano-particle form. It is important to have a good base filler to help prevent these micro-tears and the absorption of mica and bismuth into your pores. Both are skin irritants (bismuth is much worse than mica). Bismuth also promotes acne and overall skin irritation. That is why Color Me Natural uses kaolin clay for a base. The particle-size is larger, it mixes with the mica (we don’t use bismuth in our products) and helps prevent skin irritation. In addition, we use jojoba oil to keep the dusting down that comes from mineral makeup. This lessens the chance of frequent inhalation of loose mineral powder and offers better adhesion to the skin.

Many mineral makeup companies do not use a liquid in their makeup. There are several downsides to this choice. Mineral makeup on its own can be coarse and dry. It will not adhere to the skin and blend well without a wetting agent. We use jojoba oil because it’s actually a wax. It mimics the sebum in your skin, allows the skin to breathe, helps fight impurities, and helps to create a matte look. We use an all-natural preservative called Cap-5. It is a broad-spectrum preservative, antimicrobial, paraben-free, formaldehyde-free, and exceptionally mild. Our kaolin clay, jojoba oil, and all-natural preservative help to make a mineral makeup that promotes healthy skin and provides an all-natural glow. A true color match for foundation is not possible if the foundation doesn’t completely blend into the skin. The makeup cannot “sit-on-top” of the skin. It must essentially disappear, leaving behind your natural skin color while covering up impurities, fine lines, and any wrinkles.
